# Free virtual staging: what each tool gives you for free, and what a listing costs after that

By Emil Thomsen, Head of Customer Relations, October. Updated 2026-11-03. Web page: https://www.october-ai.com/guides/free-virtual-staging

No virtual staging tool we found is free for a whole listing, but most are free to try: Virtual Staging AI stages a photo on its homepage with no sign-up, REimagineHome gives 5 free designs without a card, Collov AI 5 watermarked trials, StageHQ 3 watermarked previews, AI HomeDesign about 3 free photos, Stager AI 10 low-resolution watermarked renders, and Apply Design and Styldod make the first image free. After that, the cheapest way to stage a 6-photo listing is an AI tool at about $16 to $19 (Virtual Staging AI's yearly plan, or a StageHQ pack of 20 photos with no subscription), well under $50 a project.

## What each tool gives you for free

| Tool | What is free | Limits | After the free part (as of Oct 2026) |

> Disclosure: this page is written by October, which sells staged rooms for photos captured with its own app (below). The tools above are described from their pricing pages and App Store listings, read October 20–29, 2026. We did not stage photos with them.

## What a free try is good for

A free try tells you whether a tool's furniture style fits the home and whether it keeps the room as it is: the same windows, floor, walls and view. That is worth checking before you pay, because some AI tools redraw the whole photo and can change them by accident.

A free try is rarely enough for the listing itself. Watermarked or low-resolution renders can't go on the MLS or a portal, and one or two free images won't cover a listing's main rooms. Plan to pay for the photos you publish.

## The cheapest way to stage a whole listing

Most listings stage the main rooms: living room, kitchen or dining, the main bedroom and perhaps a second bedroom or office. Here is what 6 staged photos cost with each pricing model, using each vendor's own prices.

| Tool | How you pay | 6 staged photos | Speed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Virtual Staging AI | Monthly plan, billed yearly | $16 (the 6-photo plan, one month) | About 10 seconds |
| StageHQ | One-off pack | $19 (pack of 20; 14 left, credits never expire) | About 30 seconds |
| AI HomeDesign | Monthly plan, billed yearly | $19 (30 photos a month) | About 30 seconds |
| Apply Design | Pay per image | $42 to $90 | About 15 minutes (auto) |
| Styldod | Pay per image, designer | $138 | 24–48 hours |
| BoxBrownie | Pay per image, designer | $144 ($24 each, US price) | Under 48 hours |
| October | Per room, for rooms captured with the October app | $29 a room; every delivered photo of that room is staged | Usually within a few hours |

So virtual staging under $50 for a project is easy with AI tools: Virtual Staging AI, StageHQ and AI HomeDesign all stage 6 photos for less than $20. Human designers cost $16 to $35 an image and come back in a day or two; choose them when the room is difficult or the listing is high-end. ## Free general AI: ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva

You can ask a general image tool to add furniture to a room photo for free or on a plan you already have, but it redraws the whole frame. Windows, floors and the view can change without you noticing, and furniture can come out at the wrong scale. If you try it, compare every result with the original before you publish. ## Rules for staged photos, free or paid

- **Label every staged photo** as virtually staged. Most MLSs require it, and NAR's Code of Ethics requires a true picture of the property.
- **Keep the original.** In California, AB 723 requires a statement plus a link or QR code to the unaltered photo; see [California AB 723 and listing photos](https://www.october-ai.com/guides/california-ab-723-listing-photos).
- **Never change what the buyer will find:** walls, floors, windows, fixtures, the view or defects.

## Where October fits

October doesn't stage photos you already have. It is an iPhone app that guides one walk through the home and takes the photos; October then returns finished photos and a walkthrough video. For any room in that capture you can add a staged version for $29 a room or an emptied room for $19, and it covers every delivered photo of that room, labelled on the image. The first place (up to 6 rooms, photos and walkthrough) is free; staging is paid. For staging photos you already took, the tools above are the right choice.

## Questions

**Is there a completely free virtual staging app?**
Not for a whole listing. The free options are tries: Virtual Staging AI on its homepage with no sign-up, REimagineHome's 5 free designs, Collov AI's 5 watermarked trials, StageHQ's 3 watermarked previews, Stager AI's 10 low-resolution renders, and a first free image from Apply Design or Styldod.

**Which free virtual staging needs no sign-up?**
Virtual Staging AI lets you stage a photo on its homepage without an account. REimagineHome asks for an account but no card for its 5 free designs.

**Can I use free watermarked staging on the MLS?**
No. A watermarked or low-resolution render isn't fit for an MLS or portal listing, and many MLSs check uploads for watermarks and logos ([MLS photo checks](https://www.october-ai.com/guides/mls-photo-tagging-and-watermark-checks)). Use a free try to judge the tool, then pay for the photos you publish.

**What is the cheapest virtual staging without a subscription?**
StageHQ sells credit packs that never expire: $19 for 20 photos, about $0.95 a photo. Apply Design is pay per image at $7 to $15. Among designers, Styldod is $16 an image at 8 or more.

**Can I virtually stage a listing for under $50?**
Yes. Six staged photos cost about $16 with Virtual Staging AI's yearly plan, $19 with a StageHQ pack or $19 with AI HomeDesign's yearly plan. Human designers cost about $140 for the same six.

**Does October offer free virtual staging?**
No. October's first place, up to 6 rooms with photos and a walkthrough video, is free, but a staged room costs $29 and an emptied room $19, and only for rooms captured with the October app.
