Vrbo photo requirements, and what to do when photos won't upload
Vrbo asks for horizontal photos of at least 1024 × 683 pixels, ideally 3840 × 2160 or larger, in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG, and at least 6 unique photos on the listing at all times. Most photos that fail to upload or get rejected are an iPhone HEIC file, a photo below the minimum, or a photo Vrbo rejects for content such as text overlays, collages, blur or duplicates.

Two numbers are missing from Vrbo's own pages: a file size cap and a photo cap. Some blogs repeat "20 MB" for Vrbo without linking to a Vrbo page; we couldn't find it on Vrbo's Help Center, so treat it as unconfirmed. A JPEG around 3840 pixels wide is usually a few megabytes, well clear of any likely cap. How Vrbo's numbers compare with Airbnb, Zillow and the MLS is in our photo size requirements guide.
The checklist
Work down the list before you upload, or when an upload fails.
- Is it a JPEG or PNG? iPhones save HEIC by default, and HEIC is not on Vrbo's list of file types. Switch to JPEG (see below).
- Is it at least 1024 × 683? Screenshots, photos saved from a chat and heavy crops are the usual small files. Upload the original.
- Is it horizontal? Vertical is accepted, but Vrbo says horizontal displays best.
- Would Vrbo reject it? Its guidelines list black-and-white or sepia, blurry or pixelated photos, close-ups, collages, text overlays such as URLs or contact details, and watermarks, logos or borders. It also says to avoid the iPhone's Portrait mode, which adds blur.
- Is it a duplicate? Vrbo removes duplicates and doesn't count them toward your 6.
- Do you have at least 6? Count unique, accepted photos, not uploads.
- Wait 10 minutes. Vrbo says photo changes can take up to 10 minutes to show to guests.
- Using a channel manager? Then the photos come from that software, and errors show up there, not on Vrbo.
HEIC to JPEG on an iPhone
Since the iPhone 7, iPhones capture photos as HEIF, files ending .heic, unless you change it. Vrbo's guidelines list JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and SVG, so convert before you upload. Both ways come from Apple's support page:
- For new photos: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. From then on the camera saves JPEG.
- For photos you already took: export them as JPEG, for example from the Photos app on a Mac. Apple says photos shared by AirDrop, Messages or email, or imported to a computer over USB, may be converted to JPEG automatically when the other side doesn't support HEIF.
Our free listing photo resizer has a Vrbo preset: it saves JPEGs sized toward Vrbo's 3840 × 2160 and flags any photo under 1024 × 683, all in your browser. A 12 MP iPhone photo is 4032 × 3024, so the original file from any recent iPhone clears the minimum easily; a small file almost always means a copy, not the camera.
Cover photo, order and captions
The cover (Vrbo calls it the hero image) is the first photo. Vrbo's owner app article says "Your first photo will be the photo travelers see in search results." How you set it depends on where you edit:
- AI ordering on desktop: Vrbo's upload article says it uses an AI-powered tool to choose the best hero image and image order for your listing, and the tool rearranges uploaded photos. The same article links a survey to opt out.
- Owner mobile app: open your property, tap Edit photos, then press and hold a photo and drag it into place. Whatever sits first is the cover.
- Captions on desktop: Property > Edit property > Photos, open the three-dot menu on a photo, select Edit, add or change the caption and save.
- Captions in the app: in the photo editor, open the photo, tap the pencil icon and type in Add Caption.
- Room photos: on desktop, the Room photos tab lets you assign photos to rooms, but only to bedrooms and bathrooms.
Vrbo doesn't publish a caption length limit. Keep captions to what the photo shows ("Primary bedroom, king bed, lake view"); its guidelines reject text placed on the photo itself, so the caption field is where that information belongs.
Photos not uploading, not showing or rejected
- The upload fails: check the file type (HEIC is not on Vrbo's list) and the 1024 × 683 minimum first. Then try the other route: the owner app instead of a desktop browser, or the other way round.
- Uploaded but not on the listing: Vrbo says changes can take up to 10 minutes to display on the guest-facing site.
- Rejected: if you edit on Vrbo, rejected photos are listed in your dashboard under Edit property, then Photos. Compare each one with the rejection list in the checklist above.
- Fewer photos than you uploaded: duplicates are removed and not counted. Two near-identical angles of the same room can count as one.
- In a different order than you set: Vrbo's AI tool chooses the hero image and order unless you opt out.
- Below 6 photos: keep at least 6 unique, accepted photos; fewer for more than 30 days can mean an indefinite suspension.
If none of this explains it, contact Vrbo support with the file type, pixel size and file size of a photo that fails.
Channel managers: edit photos in one place
If a channel manager or property management software (Guesty, Hostaway, OwnerRez and similar) is connected to Vrbo, the photos are sent from that software. Vrbo's guidelines say connected partners see photo problems as "integration errors" in their daily integration audit report or in the software itself, and that the 10-minute display time doesn't apply to them. So fix the photo in the software and send it again; an edit made on Vrbo may be overwritten at the next sync.
Guesty's help center says Vrbo shows only the first 50 photos sent through its connection, so put your best 50 first. That is Guesty's statement, not a rule Vrbo publishes. The same approach for Airbnb is in our Airbnb photo upload problems guide, and how many photos a rental needs is in how many photos for a listing.
Photos that meet Vrbo's rules the first time
If you are retaking the photos anyway, the October app handles the parts that cause most Vrbo trouble. You walk the rental with an iPhone 12 or newer between two stays; the app shows you where to stand, keeps the phone level and takes the frames. October's photos are AI-generated from that capture: an AI image model draws each one as a wide landscape image, usually within a few hours, with a walkthrough video if you want one. The photos get a daylight look and towels, bottles and cables are left out; the model is told to keep walls, floors, windows, fittings and the view, but compare each photo with the room before you upload it, so guests find the place they booked. A rental of up to 6 rooms is $49 for photos or $99 with a walkthrough, and your first place is free. More in rental listing photos with an iPhone and on pricing.
Questions
What are Vrbo's photo requirements?
Vrbo's Help Center asks for photos of at least 1024 × 683 pixels, ideally 3840 × 2160 or higher, in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG, horizontal where possible, and at least 6 unique photos on the listing at all times. Multi-unit properties need an exterior, an interior or lobby, three guest room and one bathroom photo.
Why are my photos not uploading to Vrbo?
Usually the file: an iPhone HEIC photo, which is not on Vrbo's list of file types, or a photo below 1024 × 683 pixels. Convert to JPEG, upload the original full-size file, and try the owner app or a desktop browser if one route fails. If a channel manager is connected, look for integration errors there.
How many photos can I upload to Vrbo?
Vrbo requires at least 6 unique photos and doesn't publish a maximum on its Help Center. Guesty, a channel manager, says Vrbo shows only the first 50 photos sent through its connection.
What is the maximum file size for Vrbo photos?
Vrbo doesn't publish one on its Help Center. A JPEG about 3840 pixels wide is usually a few megabytes; if a large panorama or 48 MP file fails, export a smaller JPEG.
How do I change my cover photo on Vrbo?
In the owner mobile app, open Edit photos and drag the photo you want to the first position; the first photo is the one travelers see in search results. On desktop, Vrbo says an AI tool chooses the hero image and order, with a survey linked on its help page to opt out.
Why did Vrbo reject my photos?
Vrbo's guidelines list black-and-white or sepia photos, blurry or pixelated ones, close-ups, collages, text overlays such as URLs or contact details, and watermarks, logos or borders. Duplicates are removed. Rejected photos appear under Edit property > Photos.
How long do new Vrbo photos take to show?
Vrbo says photo changes can take up to 10 minutes to appear on the guest-facing site. That timing doesn't apply to listings managed through connected software, which syncs on its own schedule.
