Airbnb photos not uploading: causes and fixes

Most failed Airbnb photo uploads are a file problem: save the photo as a JPEG rather than the iPhone's HEIC, make sure it is at least 1024 × 683 pixels (Airbnb's Help Center minimum; its Resource Center asks for 1200 × 800) and keep it to about 10 MB or less. If the file is fine, upload from the other place, the Airbnb app instead of a browser or a computer instead of the phone, and allow up to 30 minutes for changes to show on the listing.

The checklist

Work down the list; most hosts are done by step 4.

  1. Is it a JPEG? iPhones save HEIC files by default. Airbnb doesn't publish a list of accepted file types, so JPEG is the safe choice.
  2. Is it big enough? At least 1024 × 683 pixels, in landscape. Airbnb's photo guide recommends 1200 × 800 and says bigger is better.
  3. Is it too big? Airbnb's Resource Center says file sizes "up to about 10 megabytes" are best. A full-resolution 48 MP photo or a panorama may be larger.
  4. Is it the original? A photo that went through a messaging app, a screenshot or a social app may have been shrunk or converted.
  5. Try the other route. Desktop browser instead of the app, or the app instead of the browser; try a different browser.
  6. Wait 30 minutes. Airbnb says photo tour changes "may take up to 30 minutes to appear."
  7. Check the room. In the photo tour, every room needs at least one photo to appear.
  8. Check your channel manager. If a tool such as Hostaway manages the listing, edit photos there, not on Airbnb.

HEIC vs JPEG: the most common cause from an iPhone

Since the iPhone 7, iPhones capture photos in HEIF, files ending .heic, unless you change it. Airbnb's photo pages give sizes, not formats, and the most detailed host answer in Airbnb's own Community Center recommends JPEG. Two ways to get JPEGs, both from Apple's support page:

  • For new photos: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. From then on the camera saves JPEG.
  • For photos you already took: share or export them as JPEG. Apple says that when you share by AirDrop, Messages or email, the photo "might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG" if the receiving device doesn't support HEIF, and that photos imported to a Mac or PC over USB may also be converted to JPEG. Exporting from the Photos app on a Mac lets you choose JPEG directly.

Size: too small, too large or blurry

Two numbers appear because Airbnb's Help Center and Resource Center use different ones; a photo of 1200 × 800 or larger clears both. A photo straight from any recent iPhone camera is far above both. Photos that fail the minimum are almost always copies: a screenshot, a photo saved from a chat, a cropped corner of a larger photo. One Community Center Champion (a host volunteer, not Airbnb staff) also suggests emailing the originals to a computer and uploading from there when phone uploads come out small.

Large files are the other side. A full-resolution 48 MP photo or a stitched panorama may go over 10 MB; check the file size and export a smaller copy, around 2000 to 4000 pixels wide. Our free listing photo resizer has an Airbnb preset that saves JPEGs under 10 MB and flags any photo under 1200 × 800, all in your browser. If photos look soft after upload, start from the original full-size file, crop less, and shoot in landscape so Airbnb's square crop has room. Size rules for every platform are in our photo size requirements guide.

App vs browser, and where to add photos

Airbnb's Help Center lists the photo tour steps for desktop, the iOS and Android apps and mobile browsers. On desktop:

  1. Click Listings and select the listing.
  2. Under Listing editor, click Photos.
  3. Click Create your photo tour, then Check it out to review the sorted photos.
  4. Click Add + to add a photo and assign it to a room or space.

If one route fails, try the other. In a Community Center thread from May 2024, a host reported "Upload Failed Please Try Again" in three browsers with files under 30 MB; the hosts who answered suggested checking the 1024 × 683 minimum, uploading from a laptop, and shooting in landscape. Nobody from Airbnb replied in that thread, and we found no Airbnb help page for that exact message, so treat these as hosts' fixes. If nothing works, contact Airbnb support with the file type, pixel size and file size of a photo that fails.

Uploaded, but not showing (or in the wrong place)

  • Not on the listing yet: Airbnb says changes to the photo tour may take up to 30 minutes to appear.
  • In the wrong room: new photos are sorted into rooms automatically by Airbnb's AI. Move them in the photo tour; you can add, move or remove photos and rooms.
  • A room is missing: each room or space needs at least one photo to appear in the photo tour. Add one, or remove the room for now.
  • Not at the top: the first 5 photos are the ones shown most prominently. Change the cover photo under Photo tour > All photos > Make cover photo.
  • Cropped oddly: Airbnb crops photos into squares for search results, so keep the main subject in the middle of a landscape frame.
  • Reverted after an edit: Hostaway's help center tells its users not to make photo updates on Airbnb directly, because the changes "won't sync back" to Hostaway, and that Airbnb may reorder photos on upload. Other channel managers work the same way: edit in the tool, then export.

Verification photos are a different upload

If Airbnb has asked you to confirm photo accuracy, the usual upload won't work, by design. Its Help Center says you must visit the listing in person and "use the Airbnb app to take and send these new photos," from the same perspective as the published ones, and that "existing photos from a camera roll cannot be uploaded for review." Airbnb also tells hosts not to hire a professional for this. Co-hosts can't submit them yet. What edits are fine in listing photos is in our Airbnb photo editing guide.

Photos that upload the first time

If you are retaking the photos anyway, the October app handles the parts that cause most upload trouble. You walk the rental with an iPhone 12 or newer between two stays; the app shows you where to stand, keeps the phone level and takes the frames. October's photos are AI-generated from that capture: an AI image model draws each one as a wide landscape image well above Airbnb's minimum, usually within a few hours, with a walkthrough video if you want one. The photos get a daylight look and towels, bottles and cables are left out; the model is told to keep walls, floors, windows, fittings and the view, so a verification photo from the same spot should show the same room, but compare each photo with the room before you upload it, since Airbnb acts on photos where AI hid flaws or added things. A rental of up to 6 rooms is $49 for photos or $99 with a walkthrough, and your first place is free. More in Airbnb photos with an iPhone and on pricing.

Questions

Why won't my photos upload to Airbnb?

Usually the file: a HEIC file from an iPhone, a photo under 1024 × 683 pixels, or a file much larger than about 10 MB. Convert to JPEG, upload the original full-size photo, and try the other route (app or desktop browser) if it still fails.

Does Airbnb accept HEIC photos?

Airbnb doesn't publish a list of accepted file types. JPEG is the safe choice: set Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible on the iPhone for new photos, or export existing ones as JPEG.

What is Airbnb's minimum photo size?

Airbnb's Help Center says at least 1024 × 683 pixels and that a bigger photo is better. Its Resource Center recommends at least 1200 × 800 pixels and file sizes up to about 10 MB. Use 1200 × 800 or larger and you meet both.

Why are my new Airbnb photos not showing?

Airbnb says photo tour changes may take up to 30 minutes to appear. Also check that the photo was assigned to a room, that every room has at least one photo, and that a channel manager didn't overwrite your change.

Why are my Airbnb photos blurry?

Most often the photo uploaded was a small copy (a screenshot or a photo saved from a chat) or a heavy crop. Upload the original full-size file in landscape. Airbnb crops search results to squares, so leave room around the subject.

Should I upload Airbnb photos from the app or a computer?

Either works; Airbnb's Help Center lists the photo tour steps for desktop, the iOS and Android apps and mobile browsers. If one fails, try the other. Verification photos are the exception: they must be taken and sent in the Airbnb app, in person.

Why can't I upload photos from my camera roll for verification?

Because Airbnb's photo accuracy check requires new photos taken in person through the Airbnb app from the same perspective as your listing photos; it says existing camera roll photos cannot be uploaded for review.
