Airbnb cover photo: how to change it and which shot to use
To change your Airbnb cover photo, open the listing, go to Photo tour > All photos, select the photo you want, click Make cover photo and then Save; changes can take up to 30 minutes to appear. The best cover is a bright, horizontal, wide shot of the room or feature that sets your place apart, with the main subject in the middle, because Airbnb crops photos to squares in search results and the cover and title are the first things guests notice there.

How to set or change the cover photo
Airbnb's Help Center gives these steps for desktop:
- Click Listings and select the listing.
- Under Listing editor, click Photo tour, then All photos.
- Select the photo you want as the cover.
- Click Make cover photo, then Save.
The same Help Center article has tabs for the iOS app, the Android app and mobile browsers. Hosts in Airbnb's Community Center describe the same path in the app: open the photo tour, choose All photos, select the photo and tap Make cover photo. If your app looks different, use a desktop browser, where Airbnb's steps above apply. Airbnb says photo tour changes may take up to 30 minutes to appear.
Why the first 5 photos matter as much as the cover
Airbnb's Help Center says the first 5 photos "are the most important because they're prominently displayed on your listing," and that you can reorder those five within the photo tour. On the listing page the cover sits next to the next four, so treat them as one set: the cover, then the rooms guests book for (usually the living area and the main bedroom), then the kitchen or the feature you are known for.
Some hosts report that the cover they picked is not always the one guests see. In Community Center threads, hosts say an Airbnb algorithm swapped their cover for another photo, and AirROI, a third-party analytics company, wrote in June 2026 that Airbnb's AI now chooses which of the first five photos to show. Airbnb's own help pages don't describe this, so we can't confirm it. The practical answer is the same either way: make every one of the first five photos strong enough to be the cover.
The square crop in search results
Airbnb takes horizontal photos for the listing page but crops them into squares for search results, which is where most guests first see your cover. Its Resource Center says to take horizontal photos and center the subject in the frame. In practice:
- Keep the thing that sells the place (the view, the bed, the fireplace) in the middle third of the frame.
- Don't put the key detail at the left or right edge; a 3:2 landscape photo loses about a third of its width as a square.
- Upload at least 1200 × 800 pixels, Airbnb's Resource Center recommendation, so the square crop stays sharp. The Help Center minimum is 1024 × 683.
- Check the result on your phone in search, not only on the listing page.
How the photo tour orders your rooms
Airbnb's photo tour sorts new photos into rooms automatically; its Help Center calls it "our AI engine" and its Resource Center says the tour organizes photos by room "to help guests understand the layout." You can add, move or remove photos and rooms, and each room needs at least one photo to appear. The cover and the first five are what you control most directly, so check after every upload that the AI didn't put a bathroom or a detail shot in front.
Airbnb also recommends uploading several photos of each room from different angles, with a mix of wide, mid-range and close-up shots. Wide shots belong near the front; close-ups of amenities work further down, where captions can explain them.
Which shot makes a good cover
Airbnb doesn't publish a rule for the cover itself, but its Resource Center says the title and cover photo "are the first things guests notice in search results," and its general photo advice points to the same kind of shot:
| What to look for | Why, in Airbnb's words or numbers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A wide, horizontal shot | "Take horizontal photos"; listing pages show photos in landscape | Resource Center 367 and 687 |
| The subject in the center | Photos are cropped to squares in search; "Center the subject in the frame" | Resource Center 367 |
| Daylight, flash off | "Soft, natural light gives photos a warm and welcoming tone" | Resource Center 687 |
| Camera at eye level, level | "Shoot at eye level, without angling your lens up or down" | Resource Center 658 |
| Clutter cleared, curtains open | Find the brightest time of day, pull back window coverings and remove clutter | Resource Center 658 |
| What sets the place apart | Highlight popular amenities and unique features | Resource Center 367 and 12 |
For most rentals that means the living room or the main bedroom in daylight, shot wide from a corner. If the place has one thing other listings nearby don't, such as a view, a hot tub or a fireplace, lead with that. A Community Center Champion (a host volunteer, not Airbnb staff) put it this way for a listing with mountain views: the view should be the cover, not the living room. Test a change for a few weeks before you judge it.
In our view close-ups, collages, text on the photo and bathrooms make weak covers, because none of them reads well as a small square. Whatever you choose must show the place as guests will find it: CTV News reported in July 2026 that Airbnb will ask hosts to remove content where AI or other digital technology was used to edit flaws, hide damage or add anything that isn't part of the listing. A cover photo with October
If your current photos have no shot that works as a cover, the October app can retake the set. You walk the rental with an iPhone 12 or newer between two stays; the app shows you where to stand, keeps the phone level and takes the frames. October's photos are AI-generated from that guided capture: an AI image model draws each one as a wide landscape photo with a daylight look, and towels, bottles and cables left out. The model is told to keep walls, floors, windows, fittings and the view, but AI can still get a small detail wrong, so compare each photo with the room before you pick a cover; Airbnb acts on photos where AI hid flaws or added things. A rental of up to 6 rooms is $49 for photos or $99 with a walkthrough, and your first place is free. See pricing.

Questions
How do I change my cover photo on Airbnb?
On desktop: Listings > your listing > Listing editor > Photo tour > All photos, select the photo, click Make cover photo, then Save. Hosts report the same path in the app. Changes can take up to 30 minutes to appear.
Why isn't my Airbnb cover photo showing?
Airbnb says photo tour changes may take up to 30 minutes. Hosts in the Community Center also report Airbnb showing a different photo from the first five than the one they picked; Airbnb's help pages don't describe this, so make all five strong.
What size should an Airbnb cover photo be?
At least 1200 × 800 pixels, horizontal, per Airbnb's Resource Center; the Help Center minimum is 1024 × 683. Search results crop it to a square, so keep the subject centered.
What is the best Airbnb cover photo?
A bright, wide, horizontal daylight shot of the space or feature that sets your place apart, taken at eye level with clutter cleared and the subject in the center. For most rentals that is the living room, the main bedroom or the view.
Does Airbnb crop the cover photo?
Yes. Airbnb says it crops photos into squares for search results and on your listing, so leave room around the main subject.
How does Airbnb order photos in the photo tour?
Airbnb's AI sorts new photos into rooms automatically. You can move, add or remove photos and rooms, and reorder the first five, which are shown most prominently.
Can I use an AI-edited photo as my cover?
Only if it shows the place as guests will find it. CTV News reported in July 2026 that Airbnb will ask hosts to remove content where AI was used to edit flaws, hide damage or add things. Edits that are fine are covered in our Airbnb photo editing guide.
